BIOGRAPHY
Elizabeth Stewart, Ph.D., ATP, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at The University of Alabama. Her work focuses on assistive technology implementation and capacity building, interdisciplinary workforce development, accessibility, and inclusive educational practices.
Dr. Stewart has more than 20 years of experience in special education, assistive technology, and disability-focused training. Her work emphasizes experiential learning, systems-level implementation, and strategies that improve participation and access for individuals with disabilities across educational, healthcare, and community settings.
She currently leads and collaborates on interdisciplinary initiatives focused on assistive technology, accessibility, healthcare preparedness, and workforce development, including the Higher Education Assistive Technology (HEAT) Cohort, BOOST school-based assistive technology coaching initiatives, and statewide programs through Alabama’s Assistive Technology Act Program and United Ability. Her work frequently involves partnerships with universities, healthcare systems, schools, therapists, educators, families, and community organizations to expand disability-focused educational and training opportunities for future professionals.
Dr. Stewart’s professional experience includes roles as a Solutions Consultant for Tobii Dynavox, Assistant Professor of Special Education at the University of West Georgia, adjunct faculty at both The University of Alabama and University of Alabama at Birmingham, and more than a decade as a National Board Certified special education teacher in Homewood City Schools.
She also coordinates statewide assistive technology training and professional development initiatives through Alabama’s Assistive Technology Act Program and serves as coordinator of the annual AT Alabama Conference.
