B.S.E., University of Alabama, Business and Office Education, 1984.

1962-2025

Melanie Roberts O’Rear, a lifelong Tuscaloosa resident and devoted member of The University of Alabama community, dedicated nearly four decades of her life to the College of Education, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and excellence.

Born and raised in Tuscaloosa, O’Rear graduated from Central High School in 1980 and earned her bachelor’s degree in business and office education from The University of Alabama in 1984. Her connection to the University ran deep — her father, Dr. Marcus L. Roberts Jr., served in various roles at UA, including acting Dean of the College of Education, from 1954 until his retirement in 1987. O’Rear’s early memories of accompanying him to work in Autherine Lucy Hall laid the foundation for her own remarkable career.

In 1986, O’Rear began her tenure as Administrative Assistant to the dean and eventually becoming the Operations Coordinator in the College of Education Dean’s Office, a role she held for 39 years. Her work spanned five deanships, and she became known as the steady heartbeat of the College. Her responsibilities were vast and varied, including administrative support, project coordination, building management, and working closely with the College’s Board of Advisors. She was instrumental in founding the Staff Council, ensuring staff voices were heard and valued.

O’Rear’s colleagues described her as the soul of the office — a trusted historian, beloved friend, and tireless advocate. Her leadership was marked by grace, professionalism, and a deep commitment to teamwork. She believed in the power of relationships and often said that the friendships she built were the most rewarding part of her career.

Outside of work, O’Rear was a devoted wife to Dr. Michael Ross O’Rear, loving mother to Michael Ross O’Rear Jr., and joyful “Mimi” to her granddaughter Avery Claire O’Rear. She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on administrative boards. Her life was one of service, both professionally and personally.

O’Rear was also a passionate supporter of Alabama football and enjoyed traveling to away games with family and friends. Known for her hospitality, she created warm, welcoming spaces for gatherings and celebrations.

In 2023, O’Rear retired earlier than planned due to a brain cancer diagnosis. Despite the challenges, she faced her health journey with courage, positivity, and faith. She looked forward to traveling, spending time with loved ones, and continuing to live with joy and purpose.

Melanie Roberts O’Rear’s legacy is one of devotion, love, and impact. Her name is rightfully honored among those who have shaped The University of Alabama’s College of Education and the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff.
