Elizabeth K. Wilson

Dr. Elizabeth K. Wilson’s career at The University of Alabama’s College of Education was one of unwavering dedication and transformative leadership. Retiring in April 2024 as Interim Dean and Professor, Dr. Wilson left an indelible mark on the College and the education profession after more than three decades of service.

Dr. Wilson’s journey with the College began in 1991 when she joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her passion and expertise propelled her into various roles over the years, including Coordinator of the Clinical Master Teacher program, Professor, and key leadership positions such as Executive Director of the Alabama Consortium for Educational Renewal, Department Head of Curriculum and Instruction, Senior Associate Dean, and Interim Dean.

Before joining The University of Alabama, Dr. Wilson built a strong foundation as an educator in K-12 settings, teaching in Baton Rouge’s Cornerstone Academy and the St. Charles School District in Louisiana. Her early experiences shaped her expertise in social studies education, educational technology, and fostering school-university partnerships.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Wilson coordinated and taught courses in secondary social science, teacher education, reading, and internship supervision. Her leadership as assessment coordinator culminated in the College achieving a flawless 2023 accreditation review by the Council on the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), a testament to her meticulous approach and commitment to excellence.

Dr. Wilson’s contributions to education extended well beyond the classroom. A prolific scholar, she published 65 works, delivered over 100 presentations, and secured $4.2 million in grant funding. Her research and presentations explored diverse topics, from field-based teacher preparation and music in social studies education to literacy and technology training for teachers.

Her remarkable achievements earned her numerous accolades, including the E. Rogers Sayers Distinguished Service Award (2023), the Nellie Rose McCrory Excellence Award for Service (2022), the Distinguished Engaged Scholar Award (2022), and the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award (2012). She also held the prestigious Paul W. Bryant Endowed Professorship for Teaching (2008-2009).

Beyond her scholarly and teaching accomplishments, Dr. Wilson was a tireless advocate for professional collaboration. She held leadership roles in organizations such as the National Council for the Social Studies and the Alabama Council for the Social Studies, served on editorial boards, and contributed to journals and conferences as a reviewer and session chair.

Dr. Wilson’s service to The University of Alabama spanned a vast array of committees, addressing assessment, policy, academic affairs, curriculum development, technology, and faculty concerns. Her influence extended across campus through her roles on the General Education Advisory Group, the University Assessment Council, and the Faculty Senate, among others.

A proud alumna of The University of Alabama, Dr. Wilson earned her B.S.E. and M.A. in Secondary Social Studies Education before completing her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Louisiana State University. Her legacy as a leader, educator, and mentor continues to inspire, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues, students, and the broader educational community.
