GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships give students the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge while providing financial support. While most assistantship information can be obtained through your department, these general requirements can help you along the way.

There are three general categories of assistantships:

  • Teaching assistantships
  • Graduate assistantships
  • Research assistantships

Recipients of full assistantships generally work approximately 20 hours per week teaching, conducting research or doing administrative work. In return for this commitment, students are paid a stipend and receive a full or partial tuition scholarship. Recipients are still responsible for school fees.

Applying for Departmental GA Positions

exclamationApplications are no longer being accepted for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Your first step toward applying should be to complete this Graduate Assistantship Notification of Interest form. Priority for assistantship opportunities in the College is given to PhD students.

We encourage interested and admitted students to apply starting Sept. 1, 2025 for the 2026-2027 academic year. Hiring decisions are usually made in late spring or summer before the beginning of the new academic year. We also encourage you to be in touch with your program faculty, department chair and graduate advisor to learn more about GA opportunities in the College and across The University of Alabama campus.
