Dr. Ann Turnbull is a pioneering educator, researcher and advocate whose career has profoundly shaped the field of special education. With more than four decades of service, she has dedicated her life to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, their families, and the professionals who support them.
A graduate of the Ed.D. in Special Education program at The University of Alabama in 1972, Dr. Turnbull went on to become the Marianna and Ross Beach Distinguished Professor in Special Education at the University of Kansas, where she also co-founded and co-directed the Beach Center on Disability. Her work at the Beach Center established a nationally recognized hub for research and training focused on family support, inclusive education, and community integration.
Dr. Turnbullās scholarship has had a transformative impact on policy and practice. Her research on family-professional partnerships and community inclusion has influenced federal legislation, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and shaped countless state and local initiatives. Her writings, known for their clarity and compassion, have guided educators and administrators worldwide in adopting evidence-based, family-centered approaches.
Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy International Leadership Award and multiple lifetime achievement awards. She was also recognized by the National Historic Preservation Trust in Developmental Disabilities as one of 36 individuals globally who āchanged the course of history for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the 20th century.ā
