Undergraduate COE Scholarship Application

Rebecca Ann Baggett Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: full-time undergraduate student; admitted to TEP; Special Education Major; and GPA
of 3.0 or higher.

William R. and Eugenia Battle Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: full-time student in the College of Education; and competitive GPA.

Susan Duckworth Bedsole Endowed Scholarship (undergraduate or graduate) – Criteria: Priority given to J.L. Bedsole Scholars as selected by the J.L. Bedsole Foundation; students from southwest Alabama; students accepted into the College of Education.

Mark & Marian Berkin Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: full-time student in the College of Education; 2.5 or greater GPA; no failed courses; financial need; renewable.

Mark & Marian Berkin Physical Education Scholarship – Criteria: HPPE majors; GPA of 2.5+; Junior status (61 semester hours completed at UA); financial need; renewable.

Russell S. and Mary Louise Cantwell Endowed History Scholarship – Criteria: full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Secondary Education Social Sciences in the College of Education; GPA of 3.0+; financial need; renewable.

Capstone Education Society Scholarship – Criteria: Junior or Senior status; 3.5 or greater GPA; ACT score of 24+; Alabama resident.

The Dr. William F. Clipson and Madolyn Chambers Clipson Endowed Scholarship—Priority given to College of Education students who demonstrate financial need, and who possess a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Ralph W. Cowart Memorial Scholarship – Criteria: Competitive GPA; legal resident of Pike County, Alabama; renewable.

Sally Booth Eisenhower Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: financial need; rising junior or senior status; competitive GPA; renewable.

Finley – Crews Endowed Scholarship for Teacher Education – Criteria: Priority given to students from Clay, Coosa, or Randolph Counties (in that order); a major in Mathematics or Science education; 3.0 or greater GPA; rising junior or senior status.

The Betty B. and Edward L. Englebert Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Priority given to education students pursing bachelor’s degrees in secondary education in the areas of science, math, English language arts, social science, or foreign language; master’s degrees in counseling; or doctorates in administration.

James Harris Fitts Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Rising junior or senior status; student who has not reached their 23rd birthday during the
year to which the scholarship will be applied and who plan to teach in Alabama. Competitive ACT score.

Charles & Lucile Fletcher Endowed Scholarship – (Awarded through undergraduate admissions.) Criteria: Priority given to students from
Baldwin County, Alabama enrolled in Elementary Education; GPA of 3.0+.

The Matthew Frazier Memorial Scholarship in Special Education - Criteria: Priority of consideration given to rising seniors majoring in special education in the College of Education who plan to pursue careers as special education teachers, with additional preference given to those students who plan to work with the severely and profoundly disabled.

Guy Gilliland Memorial Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Special Education major; Junior status (61 semester hours completed at UA); TEP; graduate of a public or private high school in the city or county of Tuscaloosa; and financial need may be considered.

Harold E. Greer Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship- Criteria: Priority given to incoming freshman who are graduates of public high schools in the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, GPA 3.0 +.

The Joanna S. Hodgkins Endowed Scholarship Fund – Criteria: Priority of consideration given to students in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines, and who possess a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The endowment also shall support students who have faced hardships in their lives or who may not otherwise be able to attend college due to financial need.

George & Billie Layton Endowed Scholarship- Criteria: Priority given to full-time COE juniors or seniors; GPA 3.25+; and financial need may be considered.

Mary M. & Lee W. Gregg Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: full-time student pursuing a degree in the Multiple Abilities Program (MAP); competitive GPA; and financial need may be considered.

Jim & Ann Hayes Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Competitive GPA; rising junior or senior status. Previous recipients have achieved at least a 3.5 GPA.

Rufus Wiley Hollingsworth Memorial Endowed Scholarship – (Awarded through undergraduate admissions.) Criteria: Priority given to students from Fayette and Marion Counties.

James C. Inzer, Jr. /Alabama Power Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Alabama resident; highly competitive GPA; highly competitive ACT (25+); rising junior or senior status; financial need; renewable.

Thomas G. McDonald Memorial Endowed Scholarship- Criteria: SELA major, junior or senior status, at least 3.0 GPA.

Mary Emma Key McKinley Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Early Childhood/Elementary Education major; admission to TEP; Competitive GPA; renewable. Note: The number of McKinley Scholarships varies each year. Typically four scholarships are available each year. Previous recipients have achieved at least a 3.5 GPA.

William E. Sexton Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: Competitive GPA, full time COE student; rising junior or senior status; renewable.

George S. & Betty B. Shirley Endowed Scholarship in Special Education – Criteria: Special Education major: Junior or Senior status (at least 60 semester hours completed at UA); admission to TEP; competitive GPA.

TCI Companies Choice Award in Education Endowed Scholarship – Criteria: full-time graduate or undergraduate student; legal Alabama resident; competitive GPA; applicants must submit a short essay on having inspired others to fulfill their potential in order to demonstrate that the applicant has the passion and energy to influence people’s lives as is expected of teachers.

The College of Education Retired Faculty Endowed Scholarship - Criteria: Priority of consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines, and whose academic records indicate a high probability of success. Additional preference shall be given to those students who are descendents of retired faculty members of the College of Education.

Sandra R. Apolinsky Memorial in Counselor Education
Criteria: Doctoral student in Counselor Education; priority given to returning female students after meeting family obligations.

Sarah L. Healy Endowed Graduate Scholarship
Criteria: Graduate student in Higher Education Administration or Educational Leadership; female; short essay detailing academic and professional record together with career goals.

Irene Merriwether Jones Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Criteria: Alabama public school teacher pursuing a Master’s Degree in education; demonstrated financial need (Statement of Financial Need); competitive GPA.

Leeman C. Joslin Scholarship in Behavioral Studies Scholarship
Criteria: Counselor Education, Education Psychology, Education Research, or School Psychology; African-American or female or both; competitive GPA; demonstrated financial need (Statement of Financial Need)

Paul G. Orr Memorial Fellowship in Educational Administration with priority to Educational Leadership
Criteria: Applicants should be U.S. or foreign nationals who plan to teach or work in American-Sponsored Overseas Schools (ASOS) or foreign national education systems. The recipient shall agree to make every effort to work in either type of system for no less than three (3) years from the date of an awarded degree or completion of course work. Competitive GPA; renewable for a maximum of two academic years only; one of the three letters of recommendation to be submitted must be written by the director of the school that has most recently employed the applicant; demonstrated financial need (Statement of Financial Need).

Thelma Julia Mildred Smith Endowed Scholarship in Counselor Education
Criteria: Indication of plans for a career as an elementary or secondary guidance counselor; competitive GPA; personal qualities for assuming leadership roles in education; demonstrated financial need (Statement of Financial Need); renewable.

Esther J Swenson Endowed Scholarship
Criteria: Doctoral student majoring in Early Childhood/Elementary Education; competitive GPA; personal qualities for assuming leadership roles in education; potential for making significant contributions to education.

Paul W. Terry Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Criteria: Graduate student in Educational Psychology; competitive GPA; renewable.

Yewell R. Thompson Endowed Scholarship
Criteria: Early Childhood/Elementary Education major; priority given to male students actively pursuing a doctoral degree, specialist, masters, bachelors (in that order); personal qualities for assuming leadership roles in education; potential for making significant contributions to education.

TCI Companies Choice Award in Education Endowed Scholarship
