ESL Education
The ESL graduate program provides an instructional program to prepare researchers, teachers, curriculum specialists, and administrators at all levels of instruction who are concerned with aspects of second language acquisition, learning, and teaching.
Students who successfully complete a graduate degree (MA/ EdS / EdD /PhD) will have a solid grounding in developmental, cognitive and psycholinguistic, and socio-cultural issues in language acquisition, and their implications for effective teaching of English as a second language or a foreign language. In addition, they will know structural aspects of a specific language, and will have an understanding of cross-cultural issues that affect language acquisition and communication generally. As a consequence of these specific learning outcomes, graduates will be able to incorporate language content into more effective teaching.
Students may choose from courses and specializations in (1) second language acquisition theory, (2) second language use (discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, language policy/planning), (3) second language processes and learning (second/foreign language acquisition: research and practice), (4) second language program administration, (5) second language assessment.
