READING EDUCATION (CRD)

CRD 510 Expanding Reading in the Elementary Grades
A comprehensive study of the major factors involved in teaching reading at these levels. Techniques for teaching word recognition and comprehension skills are studied extensively.

CRD 511 Beginning Reading in PK-Primary Grades
Attends to the problems of corrective reading; key areas of study include diagnostic and evaluative procedures and the organization and implementation of corrective instruction.

CRD 512 Improvement of Reading in Secondary Schools
A comprehensive study of the major components involved in literacy instruction at the secondary level. A field component is required.

CRD 553 Foundations of Reading PK-12
Course provides a comprehensive study of the development and teaching of reading in PK-12 settings. Techniques for direct instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary are studied extensively. Open only to students in Reading Specialist Certification Only program.

CSE 390 Instruction and Accommodation in Secondary Schools.
Prerequisite: Admission to PTEP. The course focuses on evaluating teaching and learning behaviors and on general teaching competencies.

CSE 401 Computers in Secondary Mathematics
Prerequisite: CAT 200 and admission to the teacher education program. Corequisite: CSE 406. The course examines and explores various technologies for use in secondary mathematics classrooms including but not limited to calculators and various computer software. Offered spring semester only.

CSE 406 Curriculum in Secondary Mathematics
Prerequisites: Admission to the teacher education program in secondary mathematics, CAT 200, and MATH 227. Corequisite: CSE 401. Future secondary mathematics teachers examine advanced concepts, structures, and procedures that comprise secondary mathematics. This course focuses on current issues and trends in the curriculum, teaching, and learning of secondary mathematics with emphasis on the investigation and implementation of current reform efforts. Offered spring semester only.

CSE 455 Literature for Adolescents
Study of contemporary literature for young adults, with emphasis on high-interest and high-quality literature from diverse authors.

CSE 469 Pedagogical Grammar
This is a practical course intended to enhance the student's understanding of the structure of the English language. The course is designed to encourage a thorough study of grammar and its role in the English language arts curriculum, to explore the psycholinguistic nature of language processes, and to develop methods of instruction for the classroom.

CSE 476 Improving Science Teaching through New Technologies
Prerequisite: CAT 100. Examination and evaluation of appropriate technologies for the secondary science curriculum. Technologies will include CD-ROM and Internet-based simulations and databases, Web pages and other Internet resources, multimedia presentations, and calculator-based laboratories.

CSE 489 Clinical Experiences in Secondary Schools
Prerequisites: PY 101, SS 121, or equivalent, and admission to TEP. Corequisite: Appropriate methods course. Observation and participation experiences in secondary schools.

CSE 493 Diversity Block Seminar
Corequisites: CSE 390 and BEF 362. A reflective teaching model will be used to explore differences in race, class, gender, and academic achievement as they affect classroom interaction and academic success.

CSE 497 Secondary School Internship
Prerequisites: Senior standing, admission to the teacher education program, teaching methods course in the major, and the minimum GPA as required by each certification program or teaching field. Observation and teaching of the major subject in the secondary school. Offered fall and spring semesters only. To enroll, apply to the coordinator of undergraduate clinical experiences prior to April 15 of the junior year.

CSE 564 Improving Social Science Instruction
Exploration and examination of methods and materials for improving social studies instruction. Focuses on teaching for diverse learners, constructivist methods, critical thinking, interdisciplinary teaching, and various technologies as they apply to secondary social studies classrooms.

CSE 597 Internship in Secondary Education
Prerequisites: A minimum GPA of 2.75 in graduate teaching field and a minimum GPA of 2.75 in professional courses; a minimum GPA of 2.75 on all work attempted (undergraduate and graduate); an overall graduate GPA of 3.0; and satisfactory completion of 12 hours in the graduate teaching field courses. Full-time internship as a teacher in the major teaching field.

CSE 658 School Accreditation Standards: Self-Study and Continuous Improvement. Three hours. A study of regional and SACS school accreditation including standards for accreditation, school self-study procedures and validation, roles of school personnel, and creating continuous school improvement activities through SACS accreditation requirements.
