THE QUEER STUDIES SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (LG SIG) SCHOLAR-ACTIVIST AWARDS PROGRAM is a program that aims to strengthen and broaden the links between activism and research as they relate to LGBTQ people in education, to the relationships between sexuality/gender and education, and to education-based approaches to challenging heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. Groundbreaking approaches to making these links and to addressing these topics through activist research are desired in the applications. The program includes three awards: a Graduate Student Travel Award, a Dissertation Award, and a Significant Body of Work Award.

Graduate Student Travel Award
This award is for up to $500 to support the travel of a graduate student to the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association. Eligible graduate students must have a proposal accepted by AERA to present significant scholarship and activism related to LGBTQ people in education and to challenging heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression in schools or other educational sites.

The 2005 recipient is Lori MacIntosh.

An applicant should submit a 3 page, double-spaced essay that clearly describes the presentation; highlights the connections between research and activism; and names the division, section, or SIG in which the presentation has been accepted. A panel of at least three Queer Studies SIG members will review the applications and award all or some of this fund to one or more student(s).

Dissertation Award
This award is for $500. It recognizes a recent graduate whose dissertation represents significant scholarship and activism related to LGBTQ people in education and to challenging heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression in schools and other educational sites. The dissertation must have been defended within 18 months prior to the annual meeting in order for the graduate to be eligible for this award.

An applicant should submit a 3 page, double-spaced essay that clearly describes the dissertation and highlights the connections between research and activism and a letter of recommendation from the supervisor of the dissertation. A panel of at least three Queer Studies SIG members will review the applications and award all or some of this fund to one or more recent graduate(s).

The 2005 recipient is Kevin J. Graziano.

Dr. Kevin J. Graziano is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Teacher Preparation Program at Nevada State College in Henderson, Nevada. He completed his doctorate in 2003 in International and Multicultural Education with a minor in Educational Technology from the University of San Francisco. Dr. Graziano’s teaching and research interests include multicultural education, teacher preparation, the digital divide, urban learning, and education for personal liberation and social change. In 2000, he conducted an exploratory study entitled, “Reflections from University Students in a South African Gay and Lesbian Society,” which is expected to be published this summer in the International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling.

Significant Body of Work Award
This award recognizes a scholar and activist who has produced a significant body of work related to LGBTQ people in education and to challenging heterosexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression in schools.

An applicant or a nominator should submit three scholarly texts, an annotated bibliography of the fuller body of work, and a brief statement describing the connections between research and activism. A panel of at least three Queer Studies SIG members will review the applications and award all or some of this fund to one or more scholar(s).

The 2005 recipient is Tara Goldstein.

Tara Goldstein is an Associate Professor working at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). She is currently the Associate Chair of Teacher Education in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning and has taught in both the undergraduate preservice teacher education and graduate education programs. Tara’s teaching and research interests include working towards equity in education, the education of immigrant adolescents, schooling in multilingual communities, schooling and sexuality, anti-homophobia education and playwriting as critical ethnography. These interests have all come together in her three ethnographic plays: Hong Kong, Canada (2001); Satellite Kids (2003); Snakes and Ladders (2004). Hong Kong, Canada is included in Teaching and Learning in a Multilingual School published by Lawrence Erlbaum. Tara is also the author of the critical ethnography Two Languages at Work: Bilingual life on the Production Floor (1997) published by Mouton de Gruyter and the co-editor with David Selby of Weaving Connections: Educating for Peace, Social and Environmental Justice (2000) published by Sumach Press.

Applicants for the Graduate Student Travel Award and the Dissertation Award should not put their names on their essays or manuscripts since they undergo blind reviews. Instead, they should attach a brief cover letter with their full name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, institutional affiliation, year of study, and anticipated graduation date (if applicable).

Five copies of the application essay/manuscripts, along with the cover letter, should be sent to the chair of the Awards Committee:
