Wilcoxon Named Paul W. Bryant Professor of Education

Dr. S. Allen Wilcoxon Dr. S. Allen Wilcoxon recently was named the Paul W. Bryant Professor in the College of Education.

Wilcoxon works in the department of educational studies in psychology, research methodology, and counseling and serves as the coordinator for the program in counselor education. In this position, he provides graduate instruction in community counseling and marriage/family counseling, supervises student interns, directs doctoral dissertation research, serves on university committees, coordinates faculty duties and assignments, manages accreditation compliance, writes for publication, and provides formal Program representation in internal and external settings.

His primary research foci as a counselor educator have been related to methods and issues affecting counselor supervision, practices in marital and family therapy, ethical decision-making in applied counselor practice, and the specialized research interests of his students in various topical areas.

Wilcoxon is the senior author of the book Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in the Practice of Marriage and Family Therapy. He has been published in Journal for Counseling and Development; The Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory, and Research; Family Therapy; The Clinical Supervisor; Counselor Education and Supervision and the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

Wilcoxon earned his bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy from Ouachita Baptist University and his master’s degree in psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University. He completed his doctorate in counseling at East Texas State University and did postdoctoral work at Texas A&M University.

“Dr. Wilcoxon has shown leadership in research and teaching since his arrival on campus about 25 years ago. His selection reflects well on this award,” said Dean Jim McLean, College of Education.

Robert “Bud” Moore and other friends established The Coach Paul W. Bryant Endowed Professorship to honor the memory of legendary UA football coach Paul William Bryant, also known as Coach Bear Bryant. Bryant earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from the College of Education while he played football for UA. As head coach for the Crimson Tide, he led the football team to six national championships and 12 SEC championships, and in 1982 was named the “winningest” coach to date with 315 wins.
