Apply for Admission...

The program in Higher Education Administration at The University of Alabama welcomes applications from highly-qualified individuals who have strong academic preparation, leadership potential, and a clearly-articulated commitment to the field of higher education administration. Admission is competitive, as we admit a small number of students each year for the M.A., Ed.D., Executive Ed.D and Ph.D. Prospective students may be either recent graduates or experienced professionals.

Admission Deadline for the Tuscaloosa Campus: February 15 (preferential) We review the total application, giving consideration to the following materials:

1. Application to the graduate school. Application to The University of Alabama graduate school must be completed prior to the February 15th application deadline. For an online application form, see https://bama.ua.edu/~graduate/AdmissGrDomDeg.html

2. Application to the department. Application to the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology studies must be completed prior to the February 15th deadline. For an online application, see http://education.ua.edu/leader/forms/DepartmentApplication.pdf

The following will be included in either your Graduate School or Department Application:

1. Standardized test scores. You should demonstrate satisfactory performance on an up to date (within the last five years) standardized test. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is the preferred test, but Miller’s Analogies Test (MAT) scores will also be considered; the GMAT will be considered for masters students only. To be considered for regular admission, you should have an acceptable entrance score, no lower than 1000 NEW (1500 OLD) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or 50th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Management Admissions.

2. Transcripts. You should submit all transcripts from postsecondary institutions attended. Prospective students should have maintained an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or a 3.0 average for the last 60 semester hours in a degree program.

3. Statement of Intent. You should address your professional reasons for pursuing the degree. The statement should be two to four double-spaced pages to enable adequate evaluation.

4. Writing Sample. Your writing sample should demonstrate your ability to engage in formal academic writing. You should demonstrate evidence of your ability to develop an argument and support it as well as your ability to use reference material appropriately. For your sample, you should submit a five-page writing sample describing a problem that faces higher education today, analyzing salient points of the issue and evaluating potential solutions (required for Executive Ed.D. applications). In lieu of the five-page essays, applicants to the MA, regular Ed.D. or Ph.D. may instead submit an academic paper, preferably on a topic related to higher education.

5. Letters of Recommendation. You should submit three letters of recommendation from professional and academic references. The letters should be sealed and submitted along with your application to the Department of Educational Leadership.

6. Vita or Resume. Your vita should highlight your education, professional experience, publications and presentations, and honors and awards.
