The purpose of the Ed.S. degree in educational leadership is to prepare individuals for various positions in organizational settings that are educational in nature. The Ed.S. program provides the coursework for those seeking "AA" certification in educational administration.

To be admitted to the Ed.S. program students must:

--have earned a Master's degree,
--present an acceptable GRE or MAT score. (See application policy.)

To receive an Alabama "AA" certificate in educational administration a student must have an "A" certificate in educational administration or valid certificate in administration from another state and meet the requirements of the Alabama State Department of Education for "AA" certification in educational administration.

Please Note: The certification programs of the department have been designed to fulfill current requirements of the Alabama State Board of Education. These board requirements change from time to time and, accordingly, the department’s requirements and programs are subject to change.

The program of study leading to Class "AA" administrative certification is based on a cohort approach to instruction with cohorts being established annually. EDS Comprehensive Examinations for Spring Term

Students must apply to take comprehensive exams in the first week of the semester. To do this, complete the form and fax it to Laura Ballard at 205.348.2161.You may check on its arrival by emailing Laura Ballard (lballard @bamaed.ua.edu).

Students must have completed all course requirements and removed all grades of "I" from their academic record before sitting for exams. Typically, students write their exams in the last semester of course work.

The Ed.S. faculty members will construct common examination comprising appropriate course-integrating questions. These questions will be amended annually. The testing coordinator will gather and disseminate the questions to the proctor of the examination, supervise the evaluation process, and report results.

The examination will be given once a semester on the same day
during the same hours in Tuscaloosa and Gadsden. Typically, the exams are scheduled on a Saturday that falls between the 8th and 10th week of the semester. All examinations will last four hours: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The exact date of the examination will be published on our website during the first week of classes.

The examination will consist of five questions, of which the student must answer four. Students may choose either to type or handwrite their examination. No lap top computers will be allowed. A room with sufficient computers will be provided.

Three Ed.S. faculty members will independently read and evaluate the questions. A five point scale will be used to record reader evaluations of student responses. The score for each question will be the average for all readers. A minimum total average score of 3.0 is required to pass the exam.
Results of the examination will be reported to the student within 4-6 weeks of taking the exam.
