Department of Kinesiology Course Sequence
HPE 199 Ecological Approach to Health and Fitness
This introductory course examines the basis for and interrelationships
among the six aspects of wellness: social, physical, emotional, intellectual,
spiritual, and environmental. The course addresses issues of physical
fitness, wellness, and personal safety applicable to the college age
group.
HPE 300 Foundations of Human Performance
Prerequisites: Human performance studies major, SOC 101 and SOC 102,
or BEF 362. A critical analysis of socio-cultural issues of the body,
physical education, and performance programs. Special emphases are placed
upon gender, race, and social class issues and their implications for
education and sport.
HPE 305 Analysis and Teaching of Movement III and IV: Dance
and Gymnastics
Provides the student with the opportunity to become proficient at performing
basic gymnastic and dance skills and at teaching them to elementary-aged
students.
HPE 306 Analysis and Teaching of Movement I: Invasion and Field
Games
This course is designed to assess the sport skill and knowledge of students
who intend to major in physical education teacher education. Students
will be required to pass knowledge examinations on concepts of activity
skills in tennis, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, and speedball.
Students will be expected to coach and officiate in a variety of sports.
HPE 307 Analysis and Teaching of Movement II: Track and Field,
and Net/Wall Games
Prerequisite: Admission to PTEP. The purpose of this course is to improve
students' performance and knowledge of skills and strategies in track
and field, and net/wall games, and acquaint them with effective teaching
behaviors appropriate for these activities.
HPE 310 Analysis and Teaching of Movement V: Swimming
Prerequisite: Admission to PTEP. The purpose of this course is to improve
students' swimming skills and knowledge of water safety and to acquaint
them with effective teaching behaviors appropriate for this activity.
HPE 311 Analysis and Teaching of Health-Related Fitness
The purpose of this course is to improve students' knowledge of the
basic principles of health-related fitness and acquaint them with effective
teaching behaviors appropriate for fitness instruction.
HPE 350 Secondary Curriculum
Prerequisite: Admission to PETE methods cohort. The purpose of this
course is to provide students with knowledge of current curricular and
instructional practices for secondary physical education programming.
Students will become acquainted with models of secondary physical education
programs and learn teaching practices which promote effective teaching
methods appropriate to this population. This course must be taken in
conjunction with HPE 351.
HPE 351 Secondary Clinical Experience
Prerequisite: Admission to PETE methods cohort. The purpose of this
clinical experience is to provide students opportunities to teach secondary
students in a public school setting. Students will become acquainted
with effective teaching methods appropriate to this population. This
course must be taken in conjunction with HPE 350.
HPE 360 The Subject Matter of Elementary Physical Education
The subject matter of elementary physical education and a comprehensive
K-5 curriculum. Concurrent enrollment in HPE 361 is required.
HPE 361 Elementary Physical Education Curriculum, Philosohpy,
and Theory
Three hours. Elementary curriculum and instruction and their basis in
developmental and constructivist theory; facilitating children's motor,
cognitive, social and aesthetic development; reflecting on practice
in terms of a sound educational philosophy. Concurrent enrollment in
HPE 360 and writing proficiency required.
HPE 362 Motor Development
Prerequisite: Human performance studies, early childhood education,
special education, or human development and family studies major; HD
101; or BEP 305. Study of growth in phylogenetic and ontogenetic sequence,
and the motor development sequence across the lifespan; integration
of movement skill and knowledge development. A field experience is required.
HPE 364 Physical Education for Elementary Schools
Prerequisite: Human performance studies, or elementary education major
and admission to PTEP. The philosophy, aims, and objectives of physical
education in the elementary school. Includes laboratory experience.
HPE 365 Applied Biomechanics
Prerequisites: Human performance studies major and either BSC 215 or
BSC 216. Review of basic anatomy, especially the muscular system, and
examination of the relationship of fundamental laws of physics to human
movement. Includes mechanical principles of skill instruction and analysis.
HPE 366 Evaluation and Measurement
Prerequisite: Human performance studies major. Study of the administration
and evaluation of test batteries in physical education, fitness management,
and personal training.
HPE 387 Field Experience in Kinesiology
Supervised professional experience in a fitness or related setting;
observation and participation under the direction of a professional
at the site.
HPE 464 Administration of Physical Education and Sport
Prerequisite: Human performance studies major. Organization and administration
of health, physical education, and athletic programs for elementary
and secondary schools.
HPE 468 Adapted Physical Education
Prerequisite: Human performance studies major and HPE 365. The course
includes basic information on exceptionalities; movement and leisure
needs of the handicapped; provisions and available programs; roles of
various service agencies and organizations; state and federal legislation;
and mainstreaming. A clinical experience is required.
HPE 487 Physical Education Teaching Methods and Practice
Prerequisites: HPE 350, HPE 351, HPE 360, HPE 361and admission to TEP.
Course designed to help students to gain an in-depth understanding of
physical education curriculum and instruction. More specifically, this
course extends work in HPE 350/351 and HPE 360/361 and helps students
better understand the relation of theory to practice; acquire a more
in-depth understanding of various physical education curriculum models
and how these models are taught in schools, and understand how to accommodate
the individual differences among learners.
HPE 488 Internship in Fitness Management
Prerequisite: Fitness management major. Directed internship in an area
of specialization, completed in cooperation with a community agency
or business, clinical, or other appropriate organization. Observation
and on-the-job experience through direct participation in ongoing programs.
HPE 491 Sport, Exercise, and the Social Sciences
Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing. Explores the major issues that
occupy social scientists involved in the study of sport and exercise.
HPE 492 Physiology of Exercise
Prerequisite: Human performance studies major and either BSC 215 or
BSC 216; or permission of the instructor. This course examines the human
physiological response to exercise.
HPE 493 Fitness Appraisal and Exercise Prescription
Prerequisites: Human performance studies major and HPE 492. A study
of the application of exercise testing and prescription principles to
apparently healthy and diseased populations. Successful leadership,
programming, and management principles for fitness settings will also
be examined.
HPE 496 Independent Study in Physical Education
Prerequisite: Human performance studies major. The purpose of this course
is to provide the student an opportunity to further develop their skills/knowledge/instructional
techniques in the area of human performance. (For human performance
majors only.)
HPE 497 Internship in Physical Education (N-12)
Prerequisites: Senior standing and admission to the teacher education
program, HPE 350, HPE 351, HPE 360, HPE 361, HPE 487, a minimum GPA
of 2.5 for all work attempted, and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the major.
Full-time supervised teaching experience in elementary and secondary
schools. Includes a weekly one-hour seminar. To enroll, apply to the
coordinator of undergraduate clinical experiences prior to April 15
of the junior year.
HPE 500 Sociology of Sport
Examines the institution of sport from a sociological perspective. Provides
an opportunity to critically analyze the assumptions surrounding the
social significance of sport through a process of reflective thought.
HPE 502 Current Research in Physical Education
A broad review of current published research in physical education,
with emphasis on practical application of research findings.
HPE 506 Techniques of Research
Designed to acquaint the student with the types of research and the
methods and materials necessary for scientific inquiry. Includes the
development of a research proposal, with emphasis on form and style.
HPE 507 Laboratory Techniques
Theoretical and practical understanding of physiological instrumentation
and measurement in physical education, including practical laboratory
experiences, as preparation for graduate research or other research
opportunities.
HPE 508 Perceptual-Motor Development
Perceptual-motor development of infants and young children. Current
philosophies, theories, and methods; laboratory work in movement exploration.
A clinical experience is required.
HPE 510 Teaching and Supervising Elementary School Physical
Education
Open to elementary education and physical education majors. Reviews
the essential concepts for successfully teaching grades 1-6; learning,
function, and duties of consultant.
HPE 512 Physical Education Curriculum
Program content and curriculum planning in grades 1-12 and higher education;
includes developing curriculum plan applicable to one's need.
HPE 538 Advanced Adapted Physical Education
Pertinent information concerning legislation, mainstreaming, the physical
education IEP, and movement problems of individuals who deviate from
the norm. A clinical experience is required.
HPE 550 Coaching: A Psychological Application
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and permission of the instructor. Application
of psychological concepts, theories, and principles in coaching to maximize
the athlete's performance.
HPE 562 Administration of Athletics
Problems and issues in organizing and administering secondary and college
athletic programs.
HPE 566 Evaluation in Physical Education
Covers instruments used by physical educators in schools and colleges
to measure student development and learning. In addition, methods of
evaluating physical education programs are covered.
HPE 585 Laboratory and Field Experience
Provides for teaching laboratory, internship, and/or practicum experiences,
according to individual needs and goals.
HPE 588 Sport Marketing and the Media
This course examines the various components of sport marketing and consumer
culture. Particular emphasis is given to the pervasive influence of
the media in promoting sporting products and services.
HPE 590 Sports/Dance Workshop
In depth study of physical education subject matter (gymnastics, dance,
fitness, aquatics, track and field, and sports/games) focusing on content,
theoretical frameworks, and educational perspectives. Students enroll
in 1 credit workshops according to individual needs and certification
requirements.
HPE 592 Physiology of Exercise
Designed to study the human physiological response to exercise.
HPE 593 Organization and Implementation of Adult Fitness Programs
Designed to provide practical experience in organizing and implementing
adult fitness programs.
HPE 595 Workshop in Physical Education
This course is designed to help students improve their ability to teach
elementary physical education and understand theory and research as
it is applied in the elementary setting.
HPE 596 Independent Study in Physical Education
Designed to provide the opportunity for independent study in a specific
area of physical education.
HPE 598 Non thesis Research
Experimental or analytical investigation of problems in physical education.
HPE 599 Thesis Research
Research in a selected area of physical education.
HPE 600 Motor Activity and Learning
Investigation of factors that have implications for motor learning throughout
the life span; practical implications for teaching, coaching, and analyzing
motor skills.
HPE 602 Readings in Physical Education
An independent readings course for doctoral students.
HPE 603 Special Projects in Physical Education
Experimental or analytical investigations of problems in physical education,
arranged on an independent basis for doctoral students.
HPE 604 Seminar in Physical Education
Critical issues in athletics, curriculum, instruction, evaluation, research,
fitness, individual differences, and financial support.
HPE 612 Research in Physical Education/Teacher Education
An examination of the development, design, and application of research
in physical education/teacher education.
HPE 622 Analysis of Research on Teaching in Physical Education
A thorough analysis of published research on teaching in physical education.
HPE 632 Systematic Observation in Physical Education
An examination of analytical techniques used to collect and evaluate
data related to teacher and student behaviors. Instruction in the development
and use of systematic observation instruments is provided.
HPE 642 Instructional Design in Physical Education in Higher
Education
An examination of methods, applications, and current research related
to instructional design.
HPE 646 Administration of Physical Education
Focuses on academic and practical experience in the organizational and
administrative skills necessary to successfully direct a secondary,
junior college, college, or university program.
HPE 685 Fieldwork and Laboratory Experience
Arranged on an independent basis for doctoral students. Participation
and research in schools and agencies.
HPE 690 Exercise in Health and Disease
Prerequisite: HPE 592. Designed to acquaint the student with the health
benefits of regular physical activity and exercise. The most recent
research literature is critically analyzed.
HPE 691 Research Studies in Sociology of Human Performance
A presentation of theoretical sociological principles that relate to
human performance, physical education, and exercise.
HPE 692 Seminar in Exercise Physiology
Prerequisite: HPE 592. Provides an opportunity to study in depth the
scientific literature related to various exercise physiology topics.
May be taken more than once.
HPE 698 Non dissertation Research
Prerequisite: Doctoral student standing. Experimental or analytical
investigation of problems in physical education.
HPE 699 Dissertation Research
Design, research, and/or analytical investigation of a problem in the
area of physical education to satisfy the dissertation requirement for
the doctoral degree.
