Graduate Scholarships

Scholarship funds for the 2022-2023 academic year have been distributed. 

College of Education scholarships range from $500 -$4,000 per year.  To apply for a graduate scholarship, please complete the application.

Renewal

For most College and departmental scholarships, students will need to reapply every year to be considered for renewal.

List of Graduate Scholarships

Sandra R. Apolinsky Memorial in Counselor Education 

Priority of consideration is given to students who intend to pursue a doctor of philosophy in counselor education in the College of Education. To the extent allowed by law, the award is made to a female returning to graduate school after some years of dedication to family matters such as raising children.

Dr. Harold L. Bishop Endowed Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to graduate students enrolled in the College of Education who have been unconditionally accepted and are studying school administration.

Jean H. Cecil Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Counselor Education 

Priority of consideration is given to students enrolled in the counselor education program in the College of Education.

Dr. Brad S. Chissom Memorial Endowed Scholarship

First priority of consideration is given to educational research majors whose primary residence is outside the United States. Second priority is given to educational research majors whose primary residence is in the United States. And, third priority is given to educational psychology majors.

Dr. Edward H. Cleino Endowed Scholarship

Full-time graduate or undergraduate students who are enrolled in a music education program in the College of Education and who demonstrate academic achievement. Students must possess a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale to be eligible for this award. Uses for the fund may include, but not be limited to, tuition, fees, instruments, equipment, books, or private lessons.

Dr. Margaret Adeline Coleman Endowed Memorial Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education.

Laura and James Condra Endowed Scholarship

First priority of consideration is given to full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education. Second priority of consideration is given to students who demonstrate financial need.

Helene DeBlanc Crow Memorial Endowed Scholarship  

Priority of consideration is given to students enrolled in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines.

Merlin G. Duncan Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to full-time graduate students majoring in administration and educational leadership or the administration of higher education or equivalent. Priority for the award is given to doctoral candidates.

Doctors Catherine C. and George W. Hansberry Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to students enrolled in the College of Education at The University of Alabama.

George William Hansberry, MD, Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to students enrolled in the College of Education at The University of Alabama.

Sarah L. Healy Endowed Graduate Scholarship 

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to women pursuing graduate studies in areas which prepare them for a career in higher education either as a faculty member, administrator, or counselor, and whose records indicate a high probability of success.

Irene Merriwether Jones Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to Alabama teachers who have returned to the College of Education to pursue their master’s degree.

Leeman C. Joslin Scholarship in Behavioral Studies Scholarship 

As permitted by law, priority for the award is given to African-American students enrolled full-time and who intend to pursue a degree in the College of Education. Second priority is given to female students and third priority to financially needy students

Owen and Virginia Liles Endowed Scholarship 

Priority of consideration shall be given to (graduate) students undertaking a program of study in the College of Education who have two to five years teaching experience with middle school-aged students, and who plan to pursue a career in middle school education. Additional preference shall be given to applicants who are residents of Baldwin, Conecuh, Escambia, or Monroe Counties, Alabama (if no one from the listed counties applies, second consideration goes to applicants from Greene, Sumter, Hale, Marengo, or Perry Counties). Applicants must submit an essay discussing a proposed new innovation or enhancement in middle school education; also include letters of recommendations from a school administrator who supervised applicant and from parents of former students.

James E. McLean Endowed Graduate Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to full-time graduate students in the College of Education at The University of Alabama

Paul G. Orr Memorial Fellowship 

Fellowships are awarded to outstanding U.S. and foreign nationals enrolled on a full-time basis in graduate programs in the College of Education. Fellowships are used to promote participation in American-Sponsored Overseas Schools.

Anna and Harold Paige Scholarship Fund 

Priority of consideration is given to graduate students enrolled in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily need as defined by federal guidelines.

Daniel Evan Parker Endowed Scholarship 

First priority of consideration shall be given to full-time graduate students who are pursuing doctoral degrees in educational leadership studies through the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies in the College of Education. Second priority of consideration shall be given to other full-time graduate students pursuing degrees through the College of Education

Joan and Wray Pearce Endowed Scholarship in Education 

Priority of consideration is given to students who are enrolled in the College of Education, have a minimum of a “B” grade average, have demonstrated good citizenship, and have financial need, although not necessarily need as defined by federal guidelines.

Retired Faculty Endowed Scholarship

Priority of consideration shall be given to full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Education who demonstrate financial need, although not necessarily as defined by federal guidelines, and whose academic records indicate a high probability of success. Additional preference shall be given to those students who are descendants of retired faculty members of the College of Education

William E. Sexton Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarship awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students who intend to pursue a degree in the College of Education.

Thelma Julia Mildred Smith Endowed Scholarship in Counselor Education

Graduate student; Indication of plans for a career as an elementary or secondary guidance counselor; competitive GPA; personal qualities for assuming leadership roles in education; demonstrated financial need (Statement of Financial Need); renewable.

Esther J Swenson Endowed Scholarship 

Priority of consideration is given to qualified graduate students in early childhood education in the College of Education at the University of Alabama.

Paul W. Terry Memorial Endowed Scholarship 

Priority is given to graduate students in Educational Psychology; competitive GPA; renewable.

Yewell R. Thompson Endowed Scholarship 

Scholarships from this fund are awarded every other year to graduate students majoring in elementary education or early childhood education.

Clyde and Carolyn Zeanah Endowed Scholarship

Priority of consideration shall be given to students who graduated from a high school in Alabama, are currently teaching at a public school in Alabama, and are enrolled in the College of Education’s Educational Leadership program.
