Guilds and Circles

1844 Founders' Guild commemorates the anniversary of The University of Alabama's commitment to teacher preparation. In December 1843, the faculty requested a special meeting of the Board of Trustees to consider their request to establish a Department of Normal Instruction. The Board approved the request, and in April 1844, the faculty was prepared to receive pupils "who intend to be teachers in this state" (Catalogue of 1844). Contribution: $5,000 - $9,999

The 1928 Guild celebrates the emergence of the College of Education from its predecessor, the School of Education, in 1928. The newly created College was organized largely with the foresight of Dr. John R. McLure who anticipated the state's growing education demands and organized the curricula into 12 baccalaureate and 8 graduate degree programs. Contribution: $1,000 - $4,999

The Deans' Guild honors those individuals who have served as Dean of Education, beginning with the appointment of Dr. Fletcher Dresslar in 1908 and followed in succession by Drs. James J. Doster, John R. McLure, Robert L. Hopper, Robert E. Bills, Paul G. Orr, Rodney W. Roth, and John P. Dolly. Acting deans Drs. Ralph Cowart, M.L. Roberts, Jr., Esther J. Swenson, and W. Ross Palmer served during times of transition. Dr. James E. McLean has served as Dean since August 2004. Contribution: $500 - $999

The McLure Circle salutes Dean John R. McLure (1942-1959) and his noteworthy accomplishments during his administration. McLure succeeded in elevating the College as the standard-bearer of teacher preparation in Alabama by strengthening its stature as a true professional teacher preparation school, securing well-educated male and female scholars to its faculty, and acquiring the buildings and equipment essential to a sound program of teacher education. Contribution: $250 - $499

Bibb Graves Hall Circle applauds the grandeur and majesty of the building that symbolizes the enduring quest for knowledge by those who have embraced Education as their chosen profession. One of the finest academic buildings in the South, this three-storied brick, stone, and slate structure was named in honor of two-term Alabama Governor Bibb Graves (1927-1931; 1935-1939). Contribution: $100 - $249

The College Supporter group ecognizes the College's role in the education of future generations of Americans through enhancing teacher performance and student learning using innovative programming and technology. It advocates an evolving curriculum that enriches teachers' instructional performance by imbuing them with the latest teaching and learning research knowledge in conjunction with cutting-edge technology skills. Contribution: $35 - $99
