Capstone Education Society Awards and Scholarship
In keeping with its mission to support quality teacher education programs and academic excellence, the Society recognizes one faculty member and three alumni of the College of Education each year. Award recipients receive a plaque, a cash award, and public recognition at the awards presentation. In addition, each recipient's name is engraved on an award plaque which is permanently displayed in Bibb Graves Hall.
The Society recognizes three alumni who have made outstanding contributions to education in the following categories:
beginning teacher (three or fewer years),
classroom teacher, and
educator other than teacher.
The recipient of each award must be a graduate of the College of Education at The University of Alabama. Each recipient must show exemplary contributions and evidence of professional achievement and success as a significant participant in the educational process. Society members have an opportunity to nominate an individual for each category of this award. If necessary, a screening committee selects those nominees in each category who will comprise the slate presented to the Society for its consideration. Members vote their choice for outstanding contributions to education of an alumnus or alumna in each of the those categories.
The Society recognizes a faculty member in the College of Education whose research, teaching, and service accomplishments during the previous academic year exemplify the highest degree of academic and professional excellence.
At the present time, the Capstone Education Society supports an annual merit-based scholarship. This scholarship was established by the Society's Board of Directors to promote the undergraduate education of a student majoring in a teacher education program. It is awarded to a rising junior or senior student who has a minimum ACT score of 24, has overall GPA of at least 3.5, and is a legal resident of Alabama.
